Sex Symbols and Porn Stars

June 28, 2014

What happened to the women who used to be sex symbols or the porn stars who used to be in such demand? Many of the women who became sex symbols in motion pictures faded into oblivion after they got too old to play the dewy ingenue.

Some of the motion picture sex symbols developed their acting skills after they could no longer play women in their twenties, but most of them disappeared from the scene entirely after they were replaced by younger women.

And porn stars of yesteryear never had a chance. They weren’t mainstream to begin with and, after they lost their glitter, they were discarded like yesterday’s garbage.

It’s probably just in the last decade or two that women are starting to realize that they had better have an alternate career to fall back on after their youthful sex appeal runs out. This isn’t to say that older women don’t have sex appeal; they do, but in a different way.

By the time a woman is in her fifties, her sex appeal is more in the way she carries herself and in her self-confidence than in her nude centerfold photos. She can’t play the young coquette but she can play an older, experienced woman.

I don’t know if Marilyn Monroe, who was the ultimate sex goddess of the 1950’s and early 1960’s, would have had much of a movie career as a sex symbol, had she lived until her fifties or sixties. I don’t recall her having a strong singing voice, and her dancing was more suited to a younger woman than a woman in her fifties or sixties, so I wonder what kind of a career she would have had as an aging sex symbol.

In today’s world, when people are living so much longer, women should have a game plan for their careers. It’s OK to play nude scenes and be a sex symbol when you’re young as long as you have other career options when you get older.

I think every young wannabe sex symbol should have someone they trust, tell them that it’s not enough to be a shining star when you are young if you are going to be bankrupt and out on the streets when you are old. Every woman should have a plan B if plan A doesn’t work out for the long haul.
