Whenever I see a kid who treats her parents disrespectfully, I can usually see a pattern where the parents have been too permissive. There is usually a breakdown of the boundaries between parent and child where the parent tries to act like the child’s friend instead of like the parent.
But sometimes, it’s just a case of a child being immature and abusive, having deep entitlement issues in spite of good parenting.
In the old days, kids used to rant and rave to their friends about their parents, teachers, other kids, etc., and no one else was privy to those crazed, private sessions. Today, they get on Facebook and Twitter and write all kinds of nasty things about people without stopping to think or to care that they are hurting them.
Mostly it’s that they don’t care about hurting their family and friends, rather than not stopping to think about what they are saying and writing in a public venue.
It’s also about the gadgets that kids have today. Take away their computers, cell phones, iPads, tablets, social networking sites, and all their other electronic devices and you will see your children learn to behave like civilized people.
There have always been children who have had a chip on their shoulder and who have had trouble at home and at school, but I have never seen a whole society behave so abusively to their elders. I have also never seen a whole society expect everything to be given to them without working for it.
Who bought the laptop that your child is using? Who pays for the repairs or updated software? Who pays for the Internet connection? Who paid for the cell phone and who pays for the monthly cell phone charges?
If the parents have been paying for these things, then they can just as easily take them away. They can stop paying for an Internet connection. They can stop paying the monthly charges for the cell phone. In short, they can stop paying for all the things that are giving their children free access to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc.
The only things that parents are required to provide underage children are the basic necessities of food, shelter, and clothing. Your children may not like you for taking away their entertainment, but it’s an effective way of getting their respect.
